When did the motorist’s fascination for private number plates begin.Probably at the same time registration number were first issued to motor vehicles in 1903. Both A1 and S1 were the first numbers in England and Scotland respectively and both were acquired by motorists who queued overnight to be the first with a vehicle registration number in eac of their respective countries.
